News from Tamil Eelam - 4 December 1997 19-YEAR OLD GIRL MISSING A WEEK AFTER ARREST Nageswaran Sujitha, a 19 year old Tamil girl, was arrested exactly one week ago by Sinhalese army at Neerveli (Jaffna) and has not been seen since. Her parents are deeply worried for her safety as the occupying Jaffna army has a track record of torturing and killing its captives. Tamil women are particularly known to suffer rapes while in custody. LTTE CASUALTIES One LTTE Lt. died in Batticaloa at 3am after being bitten by poisonous snake, while last Saturday an LTTE major was killed in an unexpected clash with Sinhalese armed forces in Vavuniya town. 5 TAMILS MISSING AFTER 'REVENGE' ARRESTS The Sinhalese army has arrested 5 innocent young Tamils in revenge, after a Sri Lankan paramilitary policeman was killed in Kalawanchikudi (in the east). Parents of the arrested Tamil youth went to Kalawanchikudi special forces camp and the other camp in the area to make enquiries, where they were told that security forces have no knowledge of the young people's whereabouts. The relatives of the missing fear that their family members are being tortured, if not already killed. LANDMINE KILLS TWO MEN A 67-year old Tamil man and a co-worker were tilling a field at Neerveli when a landmine buried by the Sri Lankan army exploded, killing both. One of them was killed on the spot while the other died after being taken to hospital.
